AI chatbot vs AI agent
Quick definition
An AI chatbot uses a language model to answer messages, while an AI agent also decides which steps to take and uses tools to act on the user's behalf. Those tools can be search, APIs or business systems.

The short answer
Both use a large language model and both talk to customers in a chat window. The difference is what sits behind the conversation. An AI chatbot generates replies from its instructions and, at best, from documents it can search. An AI agent is given tools and the freedom to choose among them: it can look up an order, check stock, book a slot, create a ticket, then decide what to do with the result.
Anthropic's engineering guide “Building effective agents” draws a useful line: workflows follow predefined paths written by developers, while agents dynamically direct their own process and tool use. Most real products sit somewhere between the two.
The same question, two answers
A customer writes: “I ordered a jacket last week, where is it, and can I swap it for a size L?”
An AI chatbot answers from the shipping policy: delivery usually takes three to five days, and exchanges are possible within 30 days; here is the link to your account. Correct, but the customer still has to do the work.
An AI agent asks the customer to confirm their identity, finds the order, reads its status and tracking number, checks whether the size L is in stock, and explains how to start the exchange — or hands over to the team if the exchange needs a person. Same window, very different outcome.
Which one do you need?
A chatbot is enough when most questions are informational: opening hours, policies, product details, how-to guides. It is simpler to set up and has fewer ways to go wrong.
An agent pays off when customers' questions require their own data or an action: order status, appointments, returns, account changes, personalised product search. It needs more care: tools must be limited to what the customer is allowed to see, identity must be verified before personal data is shown, and every action should be logged. The question is not which is more advanced, but what your customers actually ask.
Where AI SmartTalk sits
AI SmartTalk assistants are AI agents: they answer from the business's knowledge base and also use tools — product search with filters, order lookup for signed-in customers on PrestaShop and WooCommerce, appointment booking, forms, SmartFlow workflows, external MCP servers and human handoff. Businesses that only need answers can simply connect knowledge sources; the tools are there when they are needed.
Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT a chatbot or an agent?
It started as a chatbot. With tools such as web search, code execution and connectors, it now behaves as an agent for some tasks. The label depends on whether it is acting through tools, not on the interface.
Are AI agents riskier than chatbots?
They can do more, so mistakes can cost more. The risk is managed by limiting what each tool can do, checking permissions in code rather than in the prompt, and keeping a person in the loop for sensitive actions.
Can a chatbot become an agent later?
Yes. On most platforms an AI chatbot becomes an agent once you connect tools to it. Start with knowledge, then add the actions customers ask for most.
