Customer self-service
Quick definition
Customer self-service is any way for customers to find answers or complete tasks on their own, without waiting for a member of staff. Help centres, FAQs, order-tracking pages and AI assistants are common forms.

Common forms of self-service
The classic tools are a help centre or FAQ, a customer account where people can see orders, download invoices or start a return, tracking pages from carriers, and community forums. Booking pages and forms that collect a request in a structured way are self-service too.
AI assistants add a conversational layer on top: instead of searching a help centre, the customer asks a question in their own words, and the assistant answers from the same content — or acts, for example by finding an order.
Why it matters
Many customers would rather solve a simple problem themselves, immediately, than write and wait. Self-service is available at night and at weekends, scales without hiring, and frees the support team for cases that genuinely need a person.
It only works if it actually resolves the issue. A help centre that is hard to search, or a bot that cannot go beyond generic answers, pushes customers back to email and phone — now more frustrated than before.
Designing good self-service
Start with the questions customers really ask, ranked by volume: in e-commerce usually order status, delivery, returns, sizes and payment. Make sure each has a clear answer or a working tool. Put self-service where the question arises — on the product page, in the order confirmation, in the chat widget — rather than in a separate portal. Keep an obvious way to reach a person. And measure success by problems solved, not by how many contacts were avoided.
Self-service with AI SmartTalk
An AI SmartTalk assistant answers from the business's knowledge base and catalog, recommends products, lets signed-in customers of PrestaShop and WooCommerce stores check their orders, books appointments through SmartCalendar and collects structured requests with SmartForm. FAQ entries can be suggested from existing documents and web pages, and when the assistant cannot help it hands the conversation to the team.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between self-service and automation?
Self-service is about the customer doing it themselves. Automation is about the system doing work without staff. An AI assistant is both: the customer serves themselves, and the system does the searching and the actions.
Do customers prefer self-service?
For simple, factual requests, many do, because it is faster. For complex or emotional situations they still want a person, which is why a clear route to a human matters.
How do I measure self-service success?
Look at resolution — did the customer get what they needed? — through feedback, repeat contacts on the same topic and the share of conversations resolved without a person.
