Conversational AI
Quick definition
Conversational AI is the set of technologies that let software understand people and reply to them in natural language, by text or voice. Language understanding, dialogue management and text or speech generation are its building blocks; chatbots, voice assistants and AI agents are its applications.

The building blocks
A conversational system has to do four things. Understand the message: work out what the person wants and pick out details such as an order number or a size. Keep track of the dialogue: remember what was said three messages ago and what is still missing. Decide what to do: answer, ask a clarifying question, look something up or hand over. Produce the reply, in text or, for voice, through speech synthesis — with speech recognition at the start of the chain.
Before 2022 these blocks were usually separate models: an intent classifier, a slot extractor, a dialogue manager and templates for replies. Large language models now cover most of them in one model, which is why modern assistants cope with free-form questions far better than the menu-driven bots of the 2010s.
Conversational AI vs chatbot
“Chatbot” names a product: a program you talk to. “Conversational AI” names the technology behind it. A rule-based chatbot with buttons uses very little conversational AI; an assistant that understands a voice note in Spanish, finds the right product and answers in Spanish uses a lot of it.
The distinction matters when comparing tools. Two products can both be called chatbots while one only matches keywords and the other understands context, handles follow-up questions and acts through tools.
Where it helps, and where it struggles
In customer service, conversational AI answers repetitive questions at any hour, in the customer's language and on the channel they already use — website chat, WhatsApp, social messaging or the phone. In e-commerce it can act as a shopping assistant that asks about needs and suggests products.
Its weak points are well known. It can sound confident while being wrong if it is not grounded in verified data. It can lose the thread in long, messy conversations. And it should not be left alone with emotionally charged or high-stakes cases. Good deployments combine it with a knowledge base, clear limits and a fast route to a human.
How AI SmartTalk uses it
AI SmartTalk builds conversational AI agents that answer from a business's own content and catalog, reply in the visitor's language and can act through tools such as product search, order lookup for signed-in customers or appointment booking. They run on a website chat widget and on messaging channels including WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Telegram.
Frequently asked questions
Is conversational AI the same as generative AI?
Not exactly. Generative AI is any AI that produces content — text, images, audio. Conversational AI is about dialogue. Today most conversational AI uses generative language models, but it also includes speech recognition, dialogue state and integrations with business systems.
Does conversational AI understand voice?
It can, when speech recognition turns the audio into text first and speech synthesis reads the answer aloud. The language understanding in the middle is the same as for text.
What are examples of conversational AI?
Customer service chatbots on websites and WhatsApp, voice assistants on phones and smart speakers, shopping assistants that recommend products, and internal assistants that answer employees' questions from company documents.
